The Forts of the Great War

FORTE LARINO | Lardaro in Sella Giudicarie

Forte Larino is one of the five forts which originally formed the “Lardaro Barrier”, connected with a series of trenches, walkways and tunnels: this is a phase 1 fort, meaning it was one of the first to be built. It dates back to 1860/61, in the immediate aftermath of the unification of Italy, standing atop a spur of the Doss dei Morti hill. The fort was modernised in 1879. Its size is particularly striking: with its “L” shape, it occupies around 900 square metres and it is surrounded by a moat. It was designed by Oskar Meiss von Taufen. At the time, this area belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the fort was built to defend against a potential invasion from the new nation of Italy. Inside: guardrooms, kitchen, food stores, infirmary, dormitories and prison cells, capable of accommodating up to 3 officers and 122 soldiers.

FORTE CORNO | Praso di Valdaone

An imposing military building which towers over the Valle del Chiese. Skilfully restored, it is one of the wonders of World War I.

It lies on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 1,068 m, dominating the village of Praso. Forte Corno is a very fine example of Italian military architecture. The building has 54 rooms, many of which have been excellently preserved, and it was designed to accommodate up to 160 soldiers. It was built between 1890 and 1892, during the second phase of works to reinforce the border with Italy. It was connected to the valley floor by a military road.

OPENING: every day in summer. Guided tours available by appointment.
